Want Customization Potential? Be Strategic With Your House Hunting

Posted on

Having specific needs for a house is understandable when you want to become a homeowner. If you have a limited budget, you will want to get creative to make sure that you get the things that you need. For instance, you may love the idea of owning a home that you can customize in the future. But, at the same time, you may not be interested in buying a fixer-upper property that usually falls into this category. You will need to get strategic with your house hunting to find a home that allows for major customization.

Detached Room

An excellent feature to look for is a detached room. It is easy to customize these rooms into almost anything, especially if they do not have specific characteristics that already define them. For instance, a basic room with a door, windows, and flooring is almost like a blank slate ready to be transformed. The previous owner may have used it as an office or a home gym, but this does have to be its purpose. It is also possible to use the room and then make changes in the future to give it another purpose.

Basement

Do not underestimate how useful it can be to have a basement on your property. If it is an unfinished basement, you will have a lot of work to do before you can make it useful aside from providing storage. But a finished basement means that you can transform the space into almost anything. You can turn it into a vacation rental or even a standard rental in which you have tenants living there full-time. It is also possible to make it a place that allows you to invite your parents to live in the same household.

Attic

Another area that you should look at is the attic. It is crucial to look for a sizeable attic that would allow you to transform it into an actual room. This is not always possible because some attics are too small. An ideal situation is when you are able to find an attic that has already been transformed into a room. As long as the room does not have any permanent features such as a built-in murphy bed, you should feel confident enough to turn it into almost any room such as an office, personal gym, or art studio.

Looking for these features while house hunting will help you buy a highly customizable home. Make sure your real estate agent knows you're looking for options to customize your home.
